Settling down in Brisbane allowed this jetsetter to showcase pieces she’d collected all over the world. The result is an eclectic fusion of East and West.

Four years ago, interior stylist Desley Truscott came to the conclusion that she needed a home – a part-time one at least. She was spending her time travelling between Europe and the US on business and much of spring and autumn in a 17th-century farmhouse in Provence and was hankering for a home base. This four-bedroom South Brisbane apartment met the brief: brand new and already fitted out with floors, kitchen and a bathroom, it simply required decorating.

And now Desley has returned to Australia, her part-time apartment has become her permanent home.

“I decided to make this my full-time home about four months ago,” she says. “It’s been great fun to decorate my own space.”

And what a space. Perfectly placed on a most enticing bend of the Brisbane River, the apartment takes up the north-west half of the building’s third floor and the main living areas are open – in one huge sweep – to the entire list of Brisbane icons: the Brisbane River, the Botanical Garden, the impressive CBD skyline, the Story Bridge, the famous Kangaroo Point Cliffs and, across the river to the left, South Bank and the Brisbane arts precinct. The apartment’s simple design ensures just the right amount of Queensland sunlight seeps in; the everyday living areas and the main bedroom face north and soak up the views, while the lesser-used rooms – the three guest rooms and laundry – face south.

Desley changed the wall colours from neutral backdrops to bold style statements with a dramatic licorice black in the dining alcove and jungle green in the living room. Then she decked the place out with her fabulous collection of furniture, paintings and objets d’art, sourced during many happy hours spent scouring antique shops close to her Provence farmhouse.

The apartment is well thought out, with clever design features everywhere. Alcoves, creative display walls and corners, and the impressive use of glass separates living areas while promoting a flow of seemingly open rooms.

Ingenious dual balconies separate the main living areas from the hustle and bustle of urban Brisbane, functioning as expansive indoor/outdoor spaces. This huge enclosed patio has banks of glass doors on either side – sliding ones leading to the internal living area zones, and bi-folds opening onto an open-air balcony overlooking the river. Desley’s bedroom is situated at the western end of the living room and also opens up to this marvellous inside/outside room.

The streamlined apartment allowed for the decorating scheme to be as dramatic as Desley’s inner diva dictated. And, as a bonus, this time she was decorating for herself.
“I have a fabulous compilation of pieces that I’ve collected over the past 25 years – this apartment was a wonderful blank stage for putting a favourite selection together.”

Indeed, the combination of French, Balinese, Moroccan and Australian styles is an intoxicating mix. Equally impressive is the way in which Desley has successfully accommodated disparate looks and time-worn objects within modern surrounds.

Contemporary outdoor furniture is juxtaposed with antique Moroccan lanterns, a sharp black laser-cut lamp is placed next to a vintage animal-print chair, a clear perspex lamp sits next to rustic stone candlesticks. Everywhere you look, the sharp lines of modern living are softened with pieces carrying history.

“Antiques can really work well in modern homes,” Desley says. “They can give an undecorated, individual look. I get excited mixing something inexpensive with something unique and special. In my homes I also avoid bold colour – rather, a mix of tones and textures will be offset by maybe one dramatic statement, such as my black wall.”

Desley prefers not to use designer brands, with the exception of the colourful Hermes boxes in the main bedroom. All her purchases both here and overseas have been from a mix of home stores, markets, antique shops and superstores such as IKEA and Freedom. “Don’t be a slave to brands and trends, to me that’s boring and predictable,” she says.

“Over the years I’ve discovered two important things. Firstly, if you love it, buy it. Don’t necessarily worry about where it’s going to go. Secondly, don’t have things that match. This gives a very ‘interior designer’ look that can be quite predictable. I throw it all together and, somehow, because they are pieces I absolutely love, they work.”
Desley credits her time in France with honing her skills; the cornucopia of mixing styles and periods together took her aesthetic to another level, she says.

“I was like a sponge. The French do even the simplest things with such absolute style. Like women who can make a $100 outfit look a million bucks, the French also do that with homes… and hopefully, now, so do I.”

Set on a tranquil canal, this Gold Coast home captures the best of waterfront living. It soaks up glorious views, inspires easy entertaining and exudes a light and airy feel throughout.

John and Chris Punshon tell a funny story about the construction of their home on the Gold Coast. “Chris often visited the site and said, ‘What are you doing? What’s this for? I don’t know if I like that!’ ” says John, who was architect and builder on the project.

“In the end, I told her that clients aren’t allowed on the site!”

“The contractors didn’t realise I was his wife,” says Chris. “They were horrified, thinking he talks to all his clients that way.” Once the house was finished, however, all her doubts were swept aside. “It was fabulous, but I hadn’t seen a modern house like this in construction. I couldn’t see how it was all going to work.”

Domestic standoffs aside, the building went according to plan and the finished five-bedroom house is slick and minimal, but with an inviting ambience – and lots of ingenious design touches (such as the bathroom taps coming out of the mirrors, which give the bathrooms a roomier feel) and the fabulous modern materials on the benchtops and floors throughout the house.

The rich flooring is vitrified porcelain from Italy. “Concrete would have been too cold, but this gives a gorgeous lustre that brings warmth to such a large room,” says John.

The kitchen bench is also made of a new product, a reconstituted glass.

The couple bought the waterfront property with intentions to renovate the original home, but the discovery of termites and a weak slab prompted the decision to build from scratch instead.

Says John: “We had a rough idea of what we wanted: a separate area for our 18-year-old son, Jack, who is at university, an open-plan living/entertaining space, plus an upstairs suite for us.” And the home had to have a laid-back ambience.

“We refer to it as a sophisticated beach house, with all the features you’d expect in a holiday home, such as a design that catches all the breezes,” says Chris.

“We also wanted a party house, because we have lots of people around most weekends. So we wanted lots of open-plan and indoor-outdoor entertaining areas.

” The open-plan area, with its soaring ceiling, adds to the sense of space, as does the white scheme punctuated with colour.

On the ground level, sliding glass doors open the kitchen/living area to a covered terrace, which serves as the dining room.

“Apart from the breakfast bar, we have only outside dining, because, well, we are always outside!” says Chris. Also on this level are Jack’s bedroom, complete with ensuite and walk-in robe, plus two bedrooms that have been converted into a study and John’s office.

On the mezzanine level are the main bedroom, also with ensuite and walk-in robe, and a guest suite. John incorporated elements of feng shui, which he believes has much in common with good design.

He positioned the house based on weather patterns, provided lots of storage to banish clutter, placed a water feature at the entry and used mirrors for the splashback in the kitchen.

“I once had a client who wanted a feng shui home and one request was a mirror above the cooktop. I said, ‘Why not make the whole wall a mirror?’

That was 20 years ago and I’ve been doing mirrors over cooktops ever since.”

Chris especially likes this design detail: “It amazes me how much time you spend at the sink or the cooktop and you are staring at a blank wall. The mirrors are just fantastic.”

In choosing furniture, the Punshons found that everything looked too small in their luxuriously large spaces. So they sought help from friend Keith McCutcheon, who owns interiors store Casa Guardi, for custom-made pieces.

“We didn’t need much furniture, but what we have is fabulously comfortable,” says Chris. And the easy-to-clean slip covers fit perfectly with their home’s effortlessly glamorous style.

Blessed with views from hinterland to sea, this home maintains a clear focus on both stylish interiors and an idyllic location.

Nearly a century ago, US architect Frank Lloyd Wright created history with his dramatically simple designs: low-profile houses that visually merged with their surroundings while bringing the outdoors in. His influence was so strong that homes all over the world, including this one owned by Brendan Geraghty and Kara Roberts, still follow his lead.

The couple chanced upon the block for sale on the Gold Coast hinterland while driving past. “We couldn’t believe there was acreage available so close to the city, with such amazing views,” says Kara.

The beauty of their panorama, which stretches from Burleigh Heads to North Stradbroke Island, is now matched by the vision of architect Paul Uhlmann. His design follows many of Lloyd Wright’s principles, including Japanese-inspired aesthetics, simple sweeping rooflines, windows that function as picture frames, graphic indoor timber treatments and smooth transitions between inside and out.

Every aspect of this home has been carefully thought out by both the owners and architect. “Our brief was 60 pages long,” laughs Brendan.

“We had drawn up what we wanted as a floorplan, which we didn’t give to Paul, but, following our brief, one of his plans turned out exactly the same as ours. So the layout was largely ours, but in terms of the roof and the spaces, that was all Paul.”

Perched on a steep slope, the house makes the most of its fabulous aspect. As you approach it from the road above, a dramatic roofline, framed by distant high-rise buildings and views of the Pacific, produces a spectacular sense of arrival.

The layout is deceptively simple: three pavilions run side by side along the hill, linked by a corridor of western red cedar and glass. The northern pavilion includes the main bedroom, office and bathroom; the centre pavilion accommodates the living area, dining, media room and kitchen; while the third, at the southern end, features three guestrooms and two bathrooms.

The front door opens to an entry platform that looks through the open-plan kitchen/dining area and straight to 180 jaw-dropping degrees of city and ocean views, framed by a massive bifold doorway.

Every room has a balcony that opens directly onto this panorama or offers glimpses of it, increasing the home’s feeling of light and space. At night, it’s like living in fairyland.

But the impressive views in no way upstage the stylish interiors. Both Brendan and Kara preferred a minimal approach in the decor, enhancing the modern feel of Paul’s design, yet in no sense is the house stark or cold.

The overall scheme was influenced by the local environment, but the couple also introduced shots of intense orange and green for added drama.

“Everything else was fairly neutral, with the timber floors and the white walls and kitchen, so we used colour in the furniture and art to brighten things up,” explains Kara.

Rich timber detailing lends interest to the streamlined surfaces and gives the home its theme. While western red cedar makes a graphic statement, Paul has given it a sophisticated treatment that doesn’t compete with the view. Instead, windows frame and enhance the vistas, following the horizon and treeline.

The architect’s attention to detail is just as obvious on the outside. “The weatherboard exterior could have been quite boring,” says Brendan, “but Paul installed battens to create shadows and grooves, and various suspended sections give interesting lines.”

In the guestrooms, for example, Kara and Brendan didn’t want built-in wardrobes to intrude on the space, so these jut outside the main volume of the building.

“We did that with our ensuite bathroom as well,” says Kara. “Paul extended the shower beyond the main frame of the building – it’s not obvious from the inside and looks fantastic from the outside.

“It’s not a huge home, but it is a really efficient use of space,” she continues.

And, like many other homes around the world, it reflects Wright’s organic style of architecture, as relevant now as it was a century ago.
